My 700r4 is slipping in the 1st to 2nd shift and I have no idea how to fix that because transmissions are magic. Any suggestions? The transmission has probably around 125,000 miles and came out of a 1991 Caprice.
In other news the exhaust is fully done now and sounds amazing. Quiet when cruising and cam-tastic during idle.

I did a fluid and filter swap last week.

When the Pontiac 400 shits a brick and kills itself, then an LS + T56 is going in.

I watched a rebuild of 700r4 on powernation’s series last weekend. I concur wiht the witchcraftness. But... seems like it is somehting you could tackle even as a first timer, if you have a good manual and a few special tools.

Sounds like rebuild time then.

Need some more details. Is this issue only when temps are low? Or all the time during your drive?

Just all the time. The other shifts are just fine.

I’m just really not feeling removing the trans right now.

The the issue may be deeper than what I was initially thinking. I recommend hitting Google and search up the forums.

My primary guess is the TV cable is adjusted wrong. But that’s just a feeling because I’ve got a sketchy bracket setup.

Sigh, I’m probably going to play with the TV cable first and if that doesn’t fix it, I’m just going to pretend it doesn’t slip... Rebuilding a transmission is not my idea of a fun weekend.

The fluid swap precipitated the slipping. When the new fluid with better lubricity was put in, and the particles removed with the old fluid, the friction inside the transmission overall went down. The bands on the 700r4 are probably worn out. Good news is the transmission is available for fairly cheap. Cheaper to get one from an online source already rebuilt than it is to try and rebuild your current one. Just make sure to flush the transmission cooler (AND LINES) with solvent, and get a rebuilt or at least flushed torque converter.
Do it right and you wont be back in there for quite some time.
Edit: Other possibility is that the servo has gone weak or the servo seal has gone out, most people put the corvette servo in.

If you feel like swapping transmissions, a 200-4R offers a better gear spread, and is BOP compatible so you can bolt up any engine you wish.
But yeah the 700 is toast. That’s how they all fail. Could try re-adjusting the TV cable and see what happens. I kept my stock 200-4r alive for a while by increasing the line pressure by tinkering with the TV cable.

What happened to the caprice it was in? If it was in an accident suck as head on the teams could have taken some driveline shock

That very well may be. Start with the ‘easy’ things and progress from there. It won't be witchcraft after you study it.

Seeing as the 4L60e is, for the most part, an electronically controlled 700R4:

Just saw this.
A mis-adjusted TV cable can fry the trans. I want to say a cable that’s too long will keep pressure low and allow for slippage but I haven’t messed with one in a very long time.

Kinja won’t let me reply to your last post.... 700R4's should be cheap to have a shop rebuild. They made a bajillion of them. Otherwise if you get bored and wanna learn something new, there’s plenty of guides online on how to rebuild/refresh one.
Then you can put a Corvette shift solenoid in it (better for the trans anyways, less slippage) and chirp the tires on the 1-2 upshift.
